Lepper, Gary M : A Bibliographical Introduction to Seventy-Five Modern American Authors [with 3-page errata addendum]

Berkeley, Calif.: Serendipity Books, 1976.

8vo. 444 pp. New condition. Cloth in dust-jacket; with later 3 page errata addendum loosely inserted. Dust-jacket in fine condition with a view of a perfect library being looked after by Gertrude Stein courtesy of Picasso. This book is a compendium of checklists of the writings of seventy-five American poets and novelists who have achieved literary prominence since 1945. Criteria for Inclusion Each checklist includes primary work (books, playscripts, etc.), fugitive matter (broadsides, postcards, other ephemerae) and translations, if any, by a particular author. Sheet music, phonograph and tape recordings and edited books are omitted. The checklists describe the first printings of first editions, whether American (the usual case) or foreign (e.g. the British publication of WHO LOST AN AMERICAN? by Nelson Algren). Reprints and reissues are acknowledged only if (1) the author revised or expanded the original text or (2) the author signed a specific portion of the new printing; such cases are mentioned under the heading "ALSO."' All entries have been examined personally except those followed by an asterisk. Although items marked by asterisks are potential "ghosts," they are included because of the reliability of my sources for information. Review copies and uncorrected proofs in specially printed wrappers enjoy much collector and some bibliographical interest. They are mentioned in the "NOTES". Galley and page proofs presumably exist for most books but are rarely bound for circulation; they are excluded. The occasional unique copy of a book gift bound by the publisher for the author is also excluded. Acting editions of plays are included only if they are known to precede all other editions. A problem arises with respect to unpublished playscripts and screenplays, which are normally reproduced only for private purposes. Such scripts are noted only if the existence of multiple copies (reproduced by whatever means) has been confirmed. Academic theses (e.g. THE OLD MEN by John Gardner) are treated identically.
